{October 2, 2009}   Library wiki and Libguides

I’m really impressed with wikis and how easy they are to use. I’ve created a couple of lib-guides for law and my Public International Law Libgiude has had over 1000 hits. It’s a guide for finding international cases from the International Court of Justice and treaties from the United Nations.

I’m also a member of WISE (WAGUL libraries) and we hope to create a wiki to host the STIL pages.

{September 18, 2009}   Delicious & Library Thing

Wow, delicious and library thing are both amazing! I love the functionality and ease of use. All of my existing bookmarks automatically loaded into Delicious and it's so easy to tag things. I found the youtube footage on 23 Things interesting and it does make sense that someone who has actually read a book will create better and more meaningful tags than a librarian creating subject headings for a book they haven't read. It was easy for me to find all of the books on yoga that are of interest and if I want to connect with others who are also interested in these books.

{September 11, 2009}   RSS Feeds

I’ve added one yoga feed that looks quite good and a couple of library feeds. I’ve added everyone to my google reader as it was just too hard to pick 3 so look forward to hearing what everyone is up to.

{September 4, 2009}   Blogging

My sister-in-law had a baby two years ago in the UK. I have never met my nephew William but feel as if I know him through blogging. Every so often, I check out his blog to see where he has been and how much he has grown. It’s a great record of his life for himself and soemthing the whole family can enjoy!

I try not to spend too much time using a computer when I am not at  work so have never set up a blog, webmail account, facebook etc.. I can see the benefits of having a separate email account and one that is accessible anywhere that I have access to the internet but I’m not sure that I would use it much.

Shoulder Stand

Iyengar practicing Shoulder Stand

I recently heard a story about a man who started practicing yoga at 70. He has been practicing for 10 year and can do the most difficult yoga poses imaginable.  He taught himself, using books, DVD’s and has never attended a class. He practices every day in the nude in his garden.

Many people get put off yoga, thinking that they are too inflexible or too old.  Age is not an obstacle to beginning yoga and neither is inflexibility. In fact if you can’t touch your toes, yoga is for you!

Salamba Sarvangasana (shoulder stand) has lots of benefits. Being upside down you get to see the world from a new perspective. The blood is rushing to your head creating a rich source of oxygen and blood to the head. It stimulates the thyroid and parathyroid glands and is said to be  a cure for insomnia if practiced each night before going to bed. It’s a calming and soothing inversion and is also good for varicose veins.
